Who writes while I sleep?
Photography performance
2021
This work takes up again on certain conditions of the body, in this case mine, combined two actions that I carried out harshly over several sessions. On the one hand, I imposed on myself a fasting practice to connect more intensely with my corporeality by sharpening my perception from deprivation and, practicing «fasting as a pause to listen to the gagged body».
In parallel, I tie pieces of charcoal – commonly used as drawing material in fine arts, but also as incandescent material to produce fire and burn – to different parts of my body and sleep in my bed covered with white sheets, for many nights, with the charcoals tied to my body. Thus, while my fasting body slept, it left marks on the sheets, like an unconscious and illegible writing emanating from its movements. A kind of scriptural choreography of sleep.
